Wash all fruit thoroughly. Slice the orange and lemon into rounds, core and chop the apple into bite-sized pieces, and wash mixed berries if using.
In a large pitcher (at least 2 quart capacity), pour in the red wine, then add the brandy, orange liqueur, and fresh orange juice.
Add the granulated sugar and stir vigorously until completely dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness if desired.
Gently add all prepared fruit into the pitcher, ensuring the fruit is submerged in the liquid.
Cover the pitcher and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight) to allow the flavors to infuse.
When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice and pour the chilled sangria, including fruit, into each glass. If desired, top each serving with a splash of sparkling water or club soda and stir gently.
