Wash the orange and lemon thoroughly, slice them thinly, then peel, core and chop the apple into small pieces.
In a large jug, pour in the red wine, then add the brandy or cognac, fresh orange juice and caster sugar. Stir with a long spoon until the sugar has completely dissolved.
Add the orange and lemon slices, chopped apple and cinnamon stick to the jug.
Cover the jug and chill in the fridge for at least 2-4 hours, ideally overnight, to let the flavours meld.
Just before serving, fill large glasses with ice, pour the sangria until the glass is three-quarters full, then top up with chilled lemonade or sparkling water. Give it a gentle stir and serve.
