Put your martini glass or coupe in the freezer for 5–10 minutes to chill.
Fill a mixing glass with large ice cubes, then pour in 75 ml good-quality dry gin and 15 ml dry vermouth.
Stir the mixture with a long-handled bar spoon over the ice for 30–45 seconds until well chilled.
Take the chilled glass out of the freezer and strain the martini into it using a cocktail strainer.
Garnish with a lemon twist (twist the peel over the drink to release the oils), or thread 1–3 green olives onto a cocktail stick and drop them into the glass.
